Got Mold? How to Make Your Environment Less Hazardous

← Back to List
One might call 2017 the year of weathering the storms. First, there was Hurricane Harvey. And, in an unusual twist of events, snowfall hit the streets of Houston. Meanwhile, precipitation suggests dampness. Unfortunately, that itself brings its own share of consequences. Without proper protection, you could be facing issues with mold.

It’s a common dilemma that many face. For example, you might consider your own living space. Mold in your home is never something with which you want to gamble. While there are many different types, some are more dangerous than others. If you’re a contractor doing remediation work, you know that mold can be a real problem.

Builders of new construction consider safeguarding against mold to be critical. After all, there really is no safe mold. The names may be foreign to you, but they include aspergillus, cladosporium and stachybotrys atra (also known as black mold). Without question, the latter is surfacing in a number of water-damaged buildings as victims of Hurricane Harvey’s destruction.

However, that’s just a couple of mold concerns. Aspergillus is a fairly allergenic mold that is commonly found on foods and residential air conditioning systems. Meanwhile, cladosporium is typically black or green and finds its way through even fiberglass air ducts.

Common Mold-Related Health Issues

Mold can cause a variety of health issues, ranging from mild to severe to life-threatening. Some of the more common physical health risks of mold exposure include:

  • Nasal and sinus congestion, runny nose

  • Respiratory problems, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing, chest tightness

  • Cough

  • Throat irritation

  • Sneezing / Sneezing fits

More than likely you already know that mold exposure can also contribute to the development of chronic conditions like asthma. All things considered, mold is a dangerous and potentially pervasive substance. Consequently, you need to take the right maintenance and prevention cautions to avoid mold exposure.

Protection Against Mold

In light of the harm mold can do, you need an action plan. One of the best and most effective ways to mitigate the risk of mold exposure is to create an air-tight seal to prevent the build-up of moisture. Did you know? A common source of mold is the seepage of groundwater or other types of water into a building’s foundation, basement or other vulnerable areas.

Creating air-tight seals decrease the build-up of moisture and therefore increases the likelihood that the structure will become dry and protected. Concentrate on reducing the level of humidity and condensation to deep-seal your surfaces against moisture.
