Why is Polyurethane an Innovative Solution for Floors?

← Back to List
There are a few reasons that polyurethane is well respected.  Perhaps the most well-known is its tenacity.   For certain, polyurethane has high ratings when it comes to acting tough. But, what makes it such an innovative solution for floors?

Adaptability is another part of the reason that polyurethane works.  If you are looking for a basic understanding of the solution, you may want to look at this article.   In the meantime, you might be interested in some more specific reasons that polyurethane might be the ideal application for your flooring job.

Polyurethane and Floors

Nothing looks better than a beautiful shiny hardwood floor.  Polyurethane offers both the benefit of a clear finish, but also adds protection.   You should know that you have a choice between oil-based and water-based products.

So, how do you make a selection?  For starters, you shouldn’t be shy about asking for guidance.  That’s the kind of thing we do here at Marvel Coatings on a regular basis.

One advantage of water-based polyurethane is that it promises to dry much quicker.  And, the smell isn’t quite as overwhelming as oil-based polyurethane.  Obviously, both are redeeming qualities.

However, water-based polyurethane can be more costly.  And, to top it off?  Some want more sheen than offered by water-based solutions.   After the coating is applied, there may be some concerns about the surface not maintaining a shine.  In fact, the floors could become dull.

One more thing.  Water-based polyurethane offers only slight exposure to volatile organic compounds.   Why is that good thing?  During the drying process, you won’t have to worry about the release of deleterious fumes.  And, you’ll be doing less harm to the environment.

Oil-Based Polyurethane

For many, drying time isn’t that big of a concern.   Instead, the focus may be on saving costs.  Or, in some cases, it may be important to ensure a longer lasting glowing surface.

That’s where the trade-off may come in.  If you’re not in a big hurry to get back on the floor, an oil-based solution may be perfect.   For one, you will be mastering a more resilient surface.

There’s no question that polyurethane works against moisture and abrasions.  No doubt a well-applied product will be more scratch-resistant.

Notwithstanding, oil-based polyurethane has an odor.   But, that’s not to say there aren’t methods to take the smell away.  Once again, Marvel Coatings expert advisors can help on this solution.

Let’s not forget one thing.  If you are looking for that mirror finish, oil-based polyurethane will give it to you.  It makes floors showpiece quality.
